Teacher of Water Management Professionals. 110th Anniversary of Prof. Bronius Petrulis

15 September 2023 marks the 110th anniversary of the birth of Prof. Bronius Petrulis (1913-2001), one of Lithuania’s first specialists in hydraulic engineering and water supply. On the occasion of this anniversary, the Head of KTU Museum Dr. Audronė Veilentienė prepared a 2-part virtual exhibition “Teacher of Water Management Professionals. 110th Anniversary of Prof. Bronius Petrulis”. The exhibition uses photographs and documents from the family archive of Prof. B. Petrulis, KTU Museum and Archive.

Choosing the Life Path

Bronius Petrulis (1913-2001) was born in Aukštadvaris Village, Panevėžys District in a family of middle-class peasants. He attended Panevėžys Realgymnasium, graduated from Kėdainiai Higher School of Cultural Engineering, where he acquired the specialty of a cultural engineer (meliorator). From 1934 to 1940, he worked in the Department of Reclamation under the Ministry of Agriculture. During this period, B. Petrulis showed himself to be a talented designer of land reclamation systems. Among the works he designed and implemented was the project for the reclamation of the Šiaurės River basin, which prevented the level of Lake Rekyva from being lowered by one metre, as required by the officials of the Ministry of Agriculture at that time. In total, he prepared 8 similar projects at that time. In 1940, B. Petrulis was admitted to the Faculty of Hydraulic Reclamation of Vytautas Magnus University, and he completed a shortened course in 1963. He was awarded a diploma in hydrotechnical engineering. His diploma thesis was a technical project for Palanga water supply system which was commissioned by Palanga municipality, but it was not implemented due to the war. While still a student, B. Petrulis began working at the University’s Department of Sanitary Engineering, working with other specialists on projects commissioned by Lithuanian municipalities and factories. The Department was headed by Prof. Steponas Kairys, one of the most prominent and authoritative hydrotechnicians in Lithuania and a signatory of the Act of February 16th.

Research and Pedagogical Activities

Professor devoted most of his life to teaching and research. He trained water supply engineers. All professional activities of B. Petrulis were related to the University (reorganised into KPI at the end of 1950). Here he worked in various positions, from assistant to professor. From 1945 to 1948, he was Head of the Department of Land Reclamation, in 1949, he was Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Construction, from 1954 to 1956, he was the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Hydraulic Engineering, and from 1956 to 1961, he was the Head of the Department of Water Supply and Plumbing (since 1988 – Engineering Ecology). In 1954, he defended his dissertation “Hydrogeological Conditions of Kaunas City and Their Rational Use” and was awarded the degree of doctor of technical sciences. In addition to lecturing, establishing laboratories, supervising practical and laboratory work, courses and diploma projects, he conducted over 90 research projects, published dozens of articles in the press, and prepared 7 academic methodological tools. He wrote books and textbooks: “Water Supply and Plumbing in Settlements” (with S. Vabalevičius, 1962), “Handbook of Utilities and Road Management” (et al., 1964), “Plumbing Equipment in Buildings” (with Vytautas Burbulis and S. Vabalevičius, 1965), “Water Clarification in Water Supply Systems of Urban and Industrial Enterprises” (with A. Sakalauskas, 1976), “Water Supply” (et al., 1982), and prepared educational tools.

In addition to academic teaching, he worked on various land reclamation, hydrogeology and water management projects. At his advanced age, the professor was actively involved in the activities of the University and the Department, consulting young scientists and reviewing their work. Almost all Lithuanian water management engineers (about 1500) are his pupils.
